In a press conference prior to the Sakhir Grand Prix, Daniil Kvyat commented on Roman Grosjean’s accident in Bahrain and evaluated his performances during the current season …

Q: Daniel, how do you rate the career in Bahrain?
Daniil kvyatA: If we talk about the result, then I am disappointed that I finished 11th. The penalty ruined my career and prevented me from implementing the strategy. I’m sure if it weren’t for this, I could earn some points. Also, closer to the finish line on an empty track, I was driving at a competitive pace. Apparently we should have good chances this weekend and in Abu Dhabi, so I’m looking forward to the next stages.

If we talk about the race as a whole, I am very happy that everything is in order with Roman after such an accident. It is the most important thing.

Q: How psychologically difficult was it to continue the race, given that Roman hit a wall after contact with his car?
Daniil kvyat: From this point of view, the day was difficult. He collided with me, but I couldn’t do anything to prevent it. This happens in the first lap, but at first I got really mad because he just cut me off.

Then I saw an explosion and fire in the mirrors. At that time, I experienced very strange emotions and feelings, because I had never seen anything like this in my career. This kind of thing can only be seen in movies, so to be honest I was surprised.

I was worried about Roman, but when I got back into the pit lane, the team told me he was fine. At that moment, I was relieved. Of course, those shots stay in front of your eyes for a long time. To be honest, it was very difficult for me to get back behind the wheel, but that’s my job, so I hit the “Reset” button and continued.

Q: How do you rate your performances this season?
Daniil kvyat: The first races were difficult, we didn’t have enough pace, but the team was improving the car and we were making progress. Some teams in the middle group turned out to be especially strong, but often the results of a particular team depended on the characteristics of a particular track. Our car was competitive enough to compete for points regularly.

As for my performances, I added, I became a better driver. I calmed down in situations where the car wasn’t particularly suitable for me, like at the beginning of the season. I didn’t give up and kept working with my engineers to improve. Now I perform at a more competitive level.

Maybe a few years ago I would have given up, but not now. Yes, this season the situation was not always in my favor, for various reasons I did not win the points that I should have, but most of this was due to the situation being out of my control.

There were also strong races, of which I am very satisfied, such as in Sochi and Imola. I learned a lot, even from Pierre: he’s interesting to work with and he’s doing well this year. I’m glad that this year I was able to take a step forward. In Formula 1, it’s important to constantly work on yourself and add, that’s what I did this season.
