Contrary to expectations, “Gent” head coach Wim De Dekker still ran the risk of throwing Roman Yaremchuk into the fight. The Ukrainian center has just come out of self-isolation after testing positive for coronavirus. Two other Ukrainians from the Belgian club, Igor Plastun and Roman Bezus, remained on the bench. Slovan also had a Ukrainian trail, Taras Kacharaba came out behind Liberec in the center of defense.
Complementing the patriotic picture of the match for us was the refereeing team of Ekaterina Monzul, who debuted in European competitions. Already in the opening, Yaremchuk put Boukari in one-on-one, Kacharaba lost position to his opponent, but Ghana’s goal did not pose a serious threat to the Slovan goalkeeper. Soon the owners had their first complaints about Monzul, but she made it clear that she would not be pressured. Let’s face it: the Ukrainian referee is right, because the moment with the fall of Castro-Montes he did not shoot a penalty kick.
The next dangerous moment also came at Nguyen’s door, Boukari this time did not share the ball with Yaremchuk, although he could, in what he miscalculated. The goalkeeper was again at his best in melee. Goal ended one of “Slovan’s” few forays into someone else’s midfield. The pawn passed by the left flank and found Maru on the penalty line, whom nobody was looking after. The blow did not say what happened to the Guinean, but it did help a little rebound.
After the break, the guests began to act more actively, soon their activity paid off. Kacharaba hit his head after a free kick and Yusuf hit the ball into the net. This was already a serious bid for victory, while the hosts, in particular Yaremchuk, were actively abandoning their forces. However, the Ukrainian managed to score, beating Dorsch on the wall. Roman hit a nice shot from outside the area to the corner. Literally immediately after the “Ghent” goal, Yusuf had an excellent opportunity to restore his team’s lead by two goals, but he hit the post.
Immediately after that, Roman Bezus appeared on the field, “Gent” clearly intended to equalize. Also noted was Ekaterina Monzul, who took Ojige-Ofoye off the field after the replacement was made, and returned the captain of the Kums owners. It is difficult to say exactly what the replacement referee disliked, but he did show his adherence to principle on this matter. Once again, he did it already in compensated time, when for almost two minutes he identified the offenders, trying to reward them with a mutual warning …
Further! Sensing the referee’s weakness, the players of both teams began to provoke him naturally, which allowed the Czechs, in fact, to kill the five minutes compensated for the unnecessary confrontation for the owners. Out of the woods, Ekaterina Monzul still blew the final whistle, without taking anyone out. But they are unlikely to add any hope to the prospects for new appointments in European competition.
“Gent” lost again and with zero points will definitely remain in last place in Group L. “Slovan” did not benefit from this victory either, because “Crvena Zvezda” and “Hoffenheim” played 0: 0 in a parallel match.
