The Commissioner for the Protection of State Language, Taras Kremen, recalled that since mid-January 2021, customers of banks, cafes, gas stations and pharmacies must receive services in Ukrainian.

As of January 16, 2021, all service providers, regardless of the form of ownership, will be required to serve consumers and provide information on goods and services in Ukrainian. The statement was published on December 1 on the Facebook page of the Ombudsman for the state language Taras Kremnya.

The message noted that in case of violation of the right to receive information and services in the Ukrainian language, one should contact the ombudsman.

Constitutional law experts from the Venice Commission criticized a number of provisions of the Ukrainian language law. The commission noted that the language issue should not become a source of inter-ethnic tension in Ukraine.
