The EU highlights that the number of sentences in corruption investigations remains low
Events around the KSU have confirmed the vital need for serious judicial reform, according to Europe.
Recent decisions of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine (CCU) have called into question Ukraine’s achievements in the fight against corruption and have reaffirmed the vital importance of judicial reform. This is stated in the annual report of the European Union on the implementation of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU, published on Tuesday, December 1.
In particular, the report indicates that during the last year there have been several positive developments in the areas of justice, the rule of law and the fight against corruption. Thus, the Supreme Anticorruption Court issued its first verdicts and the cooperation between SAP and NABU has improved.
But the EU emphasizes that the number of convictions for corruption investigations remains low.
On the other hand, the report mentions the latest decisions of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, stating that they questioned the country’s achievements in the fight against corruption. The EU believes that events around the CCU have confirmed the vital need for serious judicial reform.
“The decision (CCU of October 27 – ed.) Attracted significant public criticism, as it questioned the reforms demanded by the Ukrainian reformist forces after the Maidan and the international community, including due to the conditions in the framework of successive IMF programs , macro-financial assistance, An action plan to liberalize the visa regime, “says the report.
The EU states that several bills have been registered in the Verkhovna Rada aimed at both restoring anti-corruption legislation and reforming the Constitutional Court, but have not yet been examined.
As a reminder, the European Union annually publishes a report on Ukraine’s implementation of the Association Agreement. It will become the basis for the EU-Ukraine Association Council, to be held on 8 December.
