The Chang’e-5 spacecraft will deliver geological samples from the Moon to Earth for the first time in 44 years
The landing was made in the Rumker Peak area in the Ocean of Storms on the western part of the visible side of the Moon.
The Chinese automatic station lander Chang’e-5 (Lunny Hare-5) made a soft landing on the lunar surface. This was reported by the China National Space Administration (CNSA) on Tuesday, December 1.
The landing was made at 5:15 p.m. Kiev time in the area of Rumker Peak in the Ocean of Storms on the western part of the visible side of the Moon.
As part of the mission, after landing on the moon, the module must collect about two kilograms of geological rock and return it to Earth. The land harvesting operation takes 48 hours. Meanwhile, the station’s orbital module with the returning vehicle is ready to dock with the launch vehicle, which will carry the capsule to it.
As a reminder, on November 23, the Chang’e-5 probe was launched by the Changzheng-5 (Long March 5) launch vehicle. The Chang’e-5 spacecraft, for the first time in 44 years, will deliver geological samples of the lunar surface and visit places where Soviet or American space missions have never been.
The landing craft with the capsule on Earth is scheduled to land on December 16-17 in northern China in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
If the mission is successful, China will become the third country in the world after Russia and the United States to deliver the lunar regolith to Earth and the first to implement such a project since 1976.
