Azerbaijan wants to take control of Lachin corridor

Aliyev demands to move the city of Lachin to Azerbaijan and change the transport corridor between Armenia and Karabakh.

The city of Lachin in Nagorno-Karabakh should be under Baku’s control, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said on Tuesday, December 1, Interfax writes.

“The strategic importance of the Lachin region is that the Lachin corridor runs through the territory of the region and the city of Lachin. As you know, this corridor is under the control of the Russian peacekeeping forces. The corridor has been under the control of the armed forces of … Armenia for many years I can say that the original version of the joint statement signed on November 10 contained a provision that stated that this corridor should remain under the control of the Armenian armed forces. I protested and as a result the corridor came under the control of the Russian peacekeeping forces. I consider this to be a great achievement, “Aliyev said. in an appeal to the people.

According to him, Armenia initially asked for a 30 km wide corridor, but in the end it was 5 km.

At the same time, RIA Novosti reports that Aliyev is demanding the transfer of the city of Lachin. “During my talks with the President of Russia, I said that the city of Lachin should also be returned to us. Therefore, we propose to build a new corridor. To develop a route for a new corridor connecting Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia, and build it. The time is also indicated here – within 3 years. But I think we can do it sooner, “Aliyev said.

According to the President of Azerbaijan, when the parameters of the new corridor are determined, Lachin can be transferred under the control of Baku.

“This issue deserves special attention, because if it had not achieved its inclusion in the declaration, the Lachin corridor would always cover the city of Lachin,” Aliyev said.

This statement has already been commented on in the Kremlin, writes TASS.

“Specifically, I will leave this issue without comment,” Peskov replied when asked if Putin really reacted positively to the idea of a corridor from Nakhichevan to Azerbaijan.

“Just to remind you that a week or two ago we were in one of the messages about a phone conversation [Путина] with Aliyev they said that the heads of state, along with other issues, discussed the development and unblocking of transport communications in the region, “said Peskov.

According to him, “transportation communications issues are on the agenda and are discussed by leaders.”

Let us remind you that on December 1, the Lachin region passed under the control of Azerbaijan, except for the 5-kilometer corridor. On November 20, the Aghdam region came under the control of Baku, and on November 25, the Kelbajar region.
