The fight between Dynamo Kiev and Vorskla Poltava was the centerpiece in the eleventh round. The leaders of the current championship played, who were separated by four points in the classification.
Changes to the teams’ starting lineups were minimal. Captain Viktor Tsygankov returned to the Kiev squad, who missed three weeks due to the coronavirus, replaced Buyalsky at the start.
Yuri Maksimov played practically the same line-up as in the previous match against Kolos, only Pavel Reynka came out instead of Chesnakov. The loss of the captain in such an important match weakened the guests.
The beginning of the match took place mainly in a positional fight, in which the opponents expected to find themselves in error. And already in the 14th minute, Dynamo got it right, they played a double movement on the right flank of the attack with the participation of Verbic and Tsygankov: the Slovenian shot in the goalkeeper’s room, where the Kiev captain completed the combination with an accurate blow .
As soon as Poltava came to his senses, in a few minutes the score could have become 2: 0 in favor of the championship leader. A similar combination was already played on the left wing by Verbic and Shaparenko, who went to the penalty area line, where De Peña was waiting for him: the Uruguayan’s billiard shot hit exactly in the corner of the goal. But the VAR system got in the way of the goal, which determined Verbic’s offside position, before his transfer to Shaparenko.
The goal disallowed by the referee did not bother the inhabitants of Kiev much, they continued to press the doors of the residents of Poltava. And yet the Dynamo managed to score the second goal in the first half. Kiev’s attack down the left flank ended with a superb pass from De Pena to the goalkeeper’s corner, where Verbic collided with the ball – Tkachenko had no chance to reflect the forward’s blow.
In the 43rd minute, the main referee did not assign a penalty to Poltava’s goal after a hand held by Ruslan Stepanyuk, considering that the player did it inadvertently. And “Vorskla” throughout the first half failed to organize at least one dangerous moment at Buschan’s door.
Vorskla coach Yuri Maksimov was unhappy with his team’s attacking play, and after the break he made two changes at once: forwards Ivan Peshich and Daniil Kravchuk appeared on the field. The second part started with attacks from Vorskla, but never reached the final blow. The defenders of the inhabitants of Kiev easily guessed all the plans of the residents of Poltava, and they themselves carried out counterattacks, bringing Verbic, Tsygankov and Shaparenko to shock positions.
The first shot off Buschan’s goal shots was made by Vorskla midway through the second half, but the Kiev keeper deflected Stepanyuk’s shot. Bogdan Lednev had the opportunity to score his first goal for the Dynamo, who appeared on the field in the second half. His free kick struck near the goalpost, but midfielder Alexander Sklyar, who secured the near post, blocked it.
At the end of the second half, the Kievites were in the minority. Ilya Zabarny played a dangerous game against the Vorskla Stepanyuk striker, and the referee, looking at the VAR, turned on a red light in front of the Dynamo defender. Yuri Ivanov’s controversial decision, especially given Stepanyuk’s offside position, but this does not make it any easier for the Kievans, provided the nervous ending to the game. But Poltava did not play with numerical advantage for long, in a few minutes the Nigerian Kane committed a hard foul on Lednevo, and the referee tied the line-ups.
In the last minutes of the game, the Kiev fans were able to take the score to a devastating one, but the defender of the Poltava team took the blow from Lednev. Mircea Lucescu’s team beat Vorskla Poltava, moving away from their rival in qualifying. The Vorsklyans suffered their second defeat in the championship, but retain their third place in the standings.
