North Korean authorities have executed two officials amid economic difficulties during the pandemic. This is stated in a report by the National Intelligence Agency of South Korea, the Associated Press reported on Friday, November 27.
Then, according to intelligence, an official was executed for importing prohibited goods into the country in the context of increased customs control at the border due to the pandemic. Another senior official was executed on charges of exchange fraud.
South Korea’s intelligence community also notes that DPRK leader Kim Jong-un has recently taken “reckless actions” amid economic difficulties, notably rising raw material prices and declining of industrial production.
In addition, fishing and salt production were ordered to be suspended due to concerns that sea salt could be infected with the coronavirus.
In Pyongyang and Chagando province, solitary confinement was introduced. It is also reported that Pyongyang, amid measures to contain the coronavirus, may postpone the Korean Workers’ Party convention, which was scheduled for early next year.
