On November 17 and 18, near the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, radiation contamination indicators at the new SNF-2 storage facility for spent nuclear fuel increased hundreds of times.
Activists from the public organization Save Dnipro announced it on their social network page.
Thus, the indicators on November 17 at 18:08 reached an incredible 124,000 WIP / hour, while the standard even for this polluted area is 210 WIP / hour, which is almost 600 times less, and on November 18 at 11:45 at the neighboring station ”. The diversion channel “- 62,400 WIP / hour, that is, almost 300 times higher than the usual value”, says the message.
It is also observed that the background radiation jumped hundreds, if not thousands of times, almost at all the measurement poles in the exclusion zone. In particular, the monitoring post in the old village of Stechanka on November 17 at 10:55 a.m. registered an indicator of 117,000 WIP / hour, and in the village of Gornostaypol, Vyshgorodsky district, Kiev region, (population of 1,100 people) on November 17 at 11:00, radiation contamination reached emergency 87620 WIP / hour. The leaps in radiation contamination continued later.
The Agency for the Management of the Exclusion Zone responded to the activists’ message, explaining that a significant short-term increase in the radiation situation in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone was due to sensor calibration. This was stated during a briefing by the deputy director of the State Agency for the Management of the Exclusion Zone (GAZO) Maxim Shevchuk.
According to him, there were no accidents or disasters, and the radiation background is normal for the exclusion zone. According to Shevchuk, there is an automated system to monitor the radiation situation and this information is open to all.
“For the system to function properly, the routine calibration of the sensors is standardized annually. These verifications have been carried out since 1988. The calibration is carried out by raising the reference source of ionizing radiation to the sensors,” Shevchuk said, adding that the work of verification will continue, therefore, the increase of indicators. it will be recorded for some time.
Earlier, “Strana” wrote that fish organisms living at different radiation levels were studied in the Chernobyl reserve.
We also report that after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Germany, radiation-infected fungi continue to grow.
