Alexander Degtyarev died of coronavirus on November 24. The president came to Dnipro to participate in his farewell.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on Thursday, November 26, participated in the farewell ceremony with the CEO of the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau, named after I. MK Yangel after Alexander Degtyarev, the OP’s press service reports.

The ceremony took place at the Palace of Culture of Mechanical Engineers in Dnipro.

The head of state laid flowers on the deceased’s coffin and spoke with Degtyarev’s family, expressing sympathy.

The president stressed that Degtyarev’s death is a great loss for the rocket and space industry in Ukraine and around the world. “He was a great designer, Ukrainian scientist. He did a lot. He was director of Yuzhnoye Design Bureau for many years, started as an engineer. My condolences to family and friends,” Zelensky said.

He initiated the posthumous assignment of the title of Hero of Ukraine to Degtyarev.

Zelensky also highlighted the importance of developing the space industry in Ukraine. He noted that very little attention has been paid to this area in recent years.

“We are definitely going to develop this direction, the country must build rockets, build and launch its satellites,” he said.

Alexander Degtyarev died on November 24 from coronavirus.

He worked at Yuzhnoye Design Bureau since 1975. He participated in the practical implementation of projects for the modernization and commercial use of the Zenit, Dnepr families space rocket complexes, a number of spacecraft and satellite systems.

He made a significant contribution to the creation of well-known space and rocket complexes in international cooperation: Sea Launch, Ground Launch, Dnepr.
