Borussia Mönchengladbach coach Marco Rose made a comment ahead of the Champions League game with Shakhtar. The game will take place on December 25.
– What is the staffing situation at Borussia M before the match with Shakhtar?
– Midfielder Jonas Hofmann, who is injured, as well as defender Rami Bensebaini, who tested positive for coronavirus, will not play against Shakhtar. But Alassane Plea came out of quarantine, and from today he is allowed to return to training in the general group. But since he has been at home the last few days, we still have to assess his form during training.
– The previous meeting with Shakhtar was quite easy for his team, as evidenced by the final score …
– Tomorrow the result of the first game will not matter. Then we played the best game, but it has already gone down in history, because each result must be obtained over and over again. We know that tomorrow Shakhtar will act in a completely different way and will try to win. Shakhtar have a very good and high quality team that attack well and defend diligently. We understand that a difficult confrontation awaits us. But we also know that we are in good shape and on the right track. We are ready and we definitely want to win this game at home.
– And yet, do you consider the 6: 0 of that match logical?
– It was our victory that he deserved, we scored many beautiful goals. I was especially impressed by the second and third balls. As for the opponent, then he was unsuccessful in many things. 6-0 is an unusual result for Shakhtar, so I think the second leg will be different.
– Has Shakhtar changed since their first meeting?
– Little has changed at Shakhtar compared to the first leg. A very important player for the Ukrainian national team, Taras Stepanenko, returned to a position of responsibility in midfield. I know that there are certain problems with the position of the left back in the central defense zone. But this does not change the situation, because the rival has a good reserve. However, we also have very high quality players.
– After half the distance, Borussia is the leader of the group. A win over Shakhtar can bring your team even closer to the playoffs …
– We played three games and we are in the position we deserve. And the meeting with Shakhtar is very important to us, regardless of the tournament line-up. We want to win and we shouldn’t think of anything else to distract us. In the Champions League you need maximum concentration and performance, regardless of the type of opponent you face. Only after the game can we talk about whether we have taken a step forward.
– Please comment on the situation with the coronavirus in your team.
– The situation with the coronavirus affects everyone. We face it all the time, but still I think we are well positioned in professional football thanks to regular testing and compliance with the rules prescribed by the health system. I have great confidence in everyone who participates and makes decisions about it. But no one is immune from infection, all clubs have to do without multiple players over and over again. It is not easy, but it affects us all equally. At the moment, we are not insured against the fact that this or that soccer player may be infected. But it is important that those who isolate themselves are ready to be replaced by others. We must accept the situation as it is.
