On the eve, Washington confirmed its refusal to continue participating in the open skies treaty.
After the United States withdraws, the open skies treaty will lose its viability, the Kremlin believes. This opinion was expressed on Monday, November 23, by the press secretary of the president of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, writes TASS.
“With the withdrawal of the United States, the treaty itself, of course, will lose its viability,” he said.
“We regret it. We believe that this treaty is a very important link in general to strengthen mutual trust, in terms of arms control, etc., etc.,” added the Kremlin spokesman.
He recalled that the Russian side “from the beginning, even when the United States announced its intention to withdraw from this document,” said “that such a step would have negative consequences.”
As reported, the previous day the United States was notified of its withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty.
The Open Skies Treaty was signed in 1992 by representatives of 23 OSCE member states. At the moment, the number of participants in the document has reached 34, including the United States and Russia. Under the agreement, the parties can conduct observation flights over each other’s territories, as well as use photo and video footage.
