The head coach of the Ukrainian team, Andriy Shevchenko, commented on the situation with the cancellation of the League of Nations match against Switzerland.
– Lucerne is a beautiful city, but I couldn’t see it, because we spent all our time in the hotel. The situation our team was in, which was organized for us, was very difficult.
– Do you know the scenario of what will happen tomorrow with the consideration of the case?
– I still don’t know the script. I think they will consider our arguments. They are quite strong. Our side has all the arguments to prove, at least we did not deserve a technical defeat. I think everything should be decided by repetition. We have to play this match and find out which team is stronger and must remain in the elite division.
– I don’t know how you survived the fall with such losses. You did not cry anywhere, you did not agree to the covid. How did you manage?
– It was a very difficult situation, literally, from the second training camp before France. It was hard to imagine how we can get out of this situation with so many patients. We did not understand how this could turn out. But our doctors did a great job. They understood the situation, we were able to locate the problem. The team was able to play.
We also play the following matches at a pretty good level. The victory over Spain is a merit of the boys. They showed their desire to play for the Ukraine team. The next training camp is a match with Poland, then Germany. There are also many patients, an unstable situation. The team showed strong qualities, showed a good game.
I am very satisfied with the way the team played and showed itself during this difficult time. We deserved our game in the situation we are in to stay in the top flight.
– Positive tests in Lucerne by Moraes and Krivtsova, who had been ill previously. How do you explain this by itself?
– I have studied this incident. When a second test is done, those who have been sick, somewhere the virus remains with them, but the virus is dead. Therefore, there were many cases where people who had been ill again passed positive tests. However, they cannot infect anyone, but the test shows the presence of a virus. Therefore, these tests are called false positives.
But they said they were false positives only the next day, and not the day we were supposed to play. This whole story was presented a little differently on game day.
– The team could not enter the dressing room in Switzerland even before the whole situation with the cancellation of the match, positive evidence. It is true?
– An unpleasant situation, similar to what happened in Germany, when we found out about the test results. We had to go to practice, they asked us to wait. We leave in an hour. The press conference took place, while we were changing clothes in the changing rooms, we were given every opportunity for the team to feel comfortable.
This was not the case in Switzerland. There the press conference was canceled, they asked us to change at the hotel, in the stadium they did not allow us to enter the locker room so that the boys could at least put on their boots. This is the first time. I find it difficult to answer the question why this is so.
Even if they were very worried that our computer was infected. But the same situation was with the Swiss team. They also had some positive players. The whole world is experiencing this moment. We need to be more open and aware of the situation. Illness is a normal situation. For me this attitude was very strange. I do not like.
– It is difficult to imagine such an attitude towards Spain or Germany. What is the fault of Ukraine, where does the conversation about technical defeat come from?
– We have fully complied with all the protocol. We had enough players to play the game on the established day or the next. It’s not our fault. The commission will fix it. She must make the right decision. The future of many situations will depend on it.
– What do you think of the option to draw?
– UEFA must decide for itself. If there are dates for a repeat, that would be the best option. This match must be played from a fair play point of view. In this sense. If there is no place or time for a rerun, the lot will be drawn. But there should be no talk of a technical defeat for the teams. It will be wrong, – said Shevchenko.
