The US government has begun alerting companies involved in the construction of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline that they may be subject to sanctions.
This was reported by the DPA, citing a senior American official. The US government has already identified a number of companies and individuals that may face penalties if they do not stop pipeline activities, including shipping.
According to the source, many companies are unaware that they face penalties, so the warnings will help them stop their activities.
The official also noted that the US government will present a report on the companies subject to sanctions to Congress in the coming days or weeks.
Construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is almost complete. This will double Russia’s natural gas supplies through the Baltic Sea to Germany, Europe’s largest economy.
