Lana Zerkal, an adviser to the head of Naftogaz, said she did not think Nord Stream 2 would be completed, while noting: “The Russians have loaded it very hard.”
She said this in an interview with NV. “I don’t believe in this project, although the Russians are very immersed in it,” Zerkal said. According to her, in addition to the sanctions, the completion of Nord Stream 2 is also hampered by the situation on the European market.
Therefore, the gas market in Europe will no longer grow at a high rate, and the environmental strategy and financial support from the EU do not foresee additional investments in oil and gas, Zerkal said. This, in turn, influences Gazprom’s current policy towards Ukraine.
“Everyone expected that Gazprom would not comply with the contract (on gas transit – ed.), But Gazprom is fulfilling it in its entirety, paying even for those volumes of gas that it does not choose,” said the adviser to the head of Naftogaz.
Note that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will bypass Ukraine. Now Russia is forced to use Ukraine’s gas transportation system to sell its blue fuel to the EU. If the new gas pipeline were to be launched, Ukraine could lose billions of dollars in transit revenue. Furthermore, the aggressor country would completely lose its dependence on the Ukrainian GTS.
As they say in Naftogaz, this dependence is one of the reasons why the Kremlin is holding back from full-scale military aggression.
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, the German newspaper Bild believes that the United States, under the leadership of newly elected President Joe Biden, will be able to stop Nord Stream 2 forever. At the same time, the Russians’ hopes that the new head of state can ease sanctions are in vain.
