Primate of the Serbian Orthodox Church dies of COVID-19

Patriarch Irenaeus died in hospital at the age of 90. The coronavirus caused him heart failure.

Serbian patriarch Irenaeus died in the hospital where he was being treated for the coronavirus. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced this on Instagram.

“It was an honor for me to meet you. People like you never leave,” wrote the head of state.

The Serbian Orthodox Church reported yesterday that Patriarch Irenaeus, 90, has deteriorated in his health.

Earlier, doctors confirmed an increase in heart failure in the Primate of the Serbian Church, but then the condition stabilized.

Irenaeus was elected Primate by the Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church on January 22, 2010. He received various awards from church and state.
