Francisco Sagasti will lead Peru until the presidential elections
Peru appointed the third president of the state in a week. He will remain in office until the spring of next year, until the elections.
The Peruvian Congress has appointed a new head of the country, the third in a week. This is Francisco Sagasti, 76, who will take office until the presidential elections in April 2021. Sagasti’s candidacy was supported by 97 deputies, against 26, writes El Peruano.
Sagasti succeeded Manuel Merino, who resigned on November 15, and Martín Viscarre as head of state.
The newly appointed leader of Peru has pledged to do everything possible to restore hope to citizens. According to him, the executive branch must show that it can be trusted.
Note that the government crisis in Peru began on November 9, when Congress indicted President Martin Viscarre on allegations of corruption and bribery. After that, protests began in the country, protesters calling Viscarre’s resignation a coup.
As previously reported, Peruvian President Manuel Merino resigned after a week in office.
