The TAP gas pipeline was built for almost four and a half years
The 878-kilometer-long gas transportation system crosses Greece, Albania, the Adriatic Sea and Italy.
The Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), built to transport gas from Azerbaijan to the EU, has been put into commercial operation. This was reported on the project website on Monday, November 16.
“Almost four and a half years after the start of the construction of a gas pipeline in Thessaloniki (Greece), the work has moved to the stage of commercial operations for the supply of gas through the TAP gas transmission system,” said TAP AG it’s a statement.
European consumers are expected to receive gas through this pipeline later this year.
The 878 kilometer long gas transport system runs through Greece, Albania, the Adriatic Sea and Italy. It will be used to transport gas from the Shah Deniz II field in the Caspian Sea.
TAP is the European section of the Southern Gas Corridor, which will transport 10 billion cubic meters of gas annually from Azerbaijan to various European markets. The performance of the gas pipeline is 20 billion cubic meters per year. It connects to the Trans Anatolian Gas Pipeline (TANAP) on the Turkish-Greek border.
TAP will facilitate the supply of gas to the countries of Southeastern Europe. The total length of the South Gas Corridor is 3,500 km and the cost of the project is estimated at $ 40 billion.
The shareholders of the Trans-Adriatic Gas Pipeline are the British BP (20%), the Azerbaijani SOCAR (20%), the Italian Snam (20%), the Belgian Fluxys (19%), the Spanish Enagas (16%), the Swiss Swis Axpo (5%).
Recall that the United States is preparing additional sanctions against the Russian Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. As a result, Russia will not be able to launch it, even if it manages to complete it, Bloomberg reported.
