Former Ukrainian midfielder Andriy Polunin shared his impression of the last match of the Nations League, in which the blue-yellows lost 1: 3 to the German team.
“The Germans started the game strong, pressing, deciding to immediately suppress the resistance of our national team. We created three half chances in five minutes, especially close to Goretska’s goal opportunity, but it was good for us that he shot higher.” In the first minute he brought the game closer to the goal of the locals, took control of the ball and scored in the first attack.
It seemed that the situation had stabilized, but before the game he stressed that a rival of such level as the German team does not forgive the slightest mistake. In the attack phase, Zinchenko lost the ball, followed by a quick and sweeping counterattack, after which he was awarded a goal in response. The punishment came instantly. And the defenders were poorly positioned: Sobol played widely, but it was necessary to position himself closer to the center-backs, that is, not to leave the corridor for the attack to penetrate. Well, Sane equaled the score due to her high individual ability.
After that we had some promising good attacks, but at times the ball work failed. In one of them there was the possibility of scoring, if, after a pass from Sobol, Zinchenko had handled the ball better, then there was the opportunity to roll into the penalty area for a match with Neuer. Literally five minutes later, Zinchenko himself misses Goretskaya, leaves him behind and scores the second goal.
I have questions about the first half for our “English” legionnaire: the cut in the first ball and did not finish in the second case. In principle, in the first part of the game, our team looked good. In the second half, the Ukrainians had chances, three hits on the shelf. But they failed again after a quick and exemplary counterattack, where the Germans took advantage of the entire width of the field, crossing the flank with a center and shot. In those moments, the class of the team lies: the ability to seize their opportunities. After the third goal, it was clear that the “blue-yellows” had the resources to level the game and at least equalize the score.
With such rivals, you have to play disciplined, selfless, be able to implement opportunities, and then you will get a result. And you can play with them. Of course, the absence of Tsygankov and Yarmolenko, creative players who know how to play outside the area, affected. In the second half, the Germans were stronger, they created more scoring chances, you can remember three in a row in a short period of time from 57 to 61 minutes, where we were lucky. But on the 64th, they still did not forgive. After that Goretska himself, the best player of the match, had a chance to score the fourth goal, hitting his head from a lethal position, but it’s good that he was right in the middle in Pyatov’s hands.
The German team won by class, by individual skill, which today turned out to be superior to that of our players. The result is logical and the score of the game. Now we have to prepare for Switzerland and win a head-on match. A very difficult opponent awaits us and a tough fight awaits us. Here it will be necessary to show an iron character “.
Recall that the Switzerland – Ukraine match will be played on Tuesday, November 17. After five rounds, the blue-yellows are ahead of the rival by three points, but a victory of 1: 0, 2: 1, or with a greater difference, it is the Swiss who will lead to third place, while Ukraine will be seen forced to fall into Division B.
