The leader of the opposition party Rodina and former head of the Armenian National Security Service Artur Vanetsyan was arrested in Yerevan. He is suspected of plotting the assassination of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. This was reported by his lawyer Lusine Sahakyan on Facebook.

According to her, law enforcement officers searched Vanetsyan’s apartment and Rodina party office. He claims that the security forces did not have permission to conduct searches.

Sahakyan clarified that her client was summoned for questioning at the investigation department of the Armenian National Security Service for questioning and was detained there on suspicion of having the intention of usurping power in the country and preparing the assassination of Pashinyan. Vanetsyan was informed about the suspicions under three articles of the Penal Code.

“This is a shameful political persecution aimed at clinging to positions of power in every way possible, stopping protests against the government and turning the country over to the enemy,” Vanetsyan’s lawyer emphasized.

Pashinyan was appointed head of the Armenian government in January 2019.
