The decision of the Ukrainian government on a weekend quarantine has come into effect. The restrictions began to operate from 00:00 hours on November 14. So far, they are designed for the next three weekends.

Representatives of small and medium-sized businesses, in particular cafe and restaurant owners, held pickets and protests from November 11 to 13. They argued that restrictions on weekend work would undermine their business.

Many mayors sided with businessmen. In Lviv, Ternopil, Cherkasy, Odessa etc. city officials have refused to introduce the weekend quarantine.

Prime Minister Denis Shmygal said on November 13 that the mayor’s offices go beyond his powers.

Health Minister Maksim Stepanov advocated for a total lockdown for several weeks, although he acknowledged that the Ukrainian economy could not afford it.

The medical community doubts that the introduction of the weekend quarantine will significantly affect the situation with the spread of the coronavirus.
