The first deliveries of vaccines are expected in the second quarter of 2021
By the end of next year, the country will receive more than eight million doses of the drug. The first deliveries can be in the second quarter.
Ukraine will be able to receive the first batch of a registered and successfully tested vaccine against COVID-19 in the second quarter of 2021. This was stated by the head of the WHO office in Ukraine, Jarno Habicht, reports on Friday, November 13, DW .
According to him, Ukraine will receive a vaccine against COVID-19 as part of the COVID-19 Global Access to Vaccine Fund (COVAX) program, which was created by the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), the WHO and various governments.
“As we know, the Ukrainian government has already expressed interest in being part of the COVAX mechanism and is now working on national documents to meet all the requirements … Ukraine is also now deciding the question of identifying the risk groups that should be vaccinated first. “Habicht said.
At the same time, he did not specify what type of vaccine we are talking about: a joint development of BioNTech and Pfizer, or some other. Habicht pointed out that each country will receive the future vaccine in an amount equivalent to 20% of the population. The WHO calls this “fair distribution” to adhere to the principle of equality in the first phase of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign.
“The tranche, which covers 20% of the country’s population, is likely to be distributed among adults at high risk, such as the elderly and those with illnesses,” said the head of the WHO office in Ukraine.
According to him, Ukraine can count on the allocation of up to 8.34 million doses of vaccine by the end of 2021, which will be 20% of the country’s population, according to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine.
“The vaccine will be delivered in tranches. And the first tranche will be in an amount equal to 3% of the population, which is around 1.25 million doses. These, according to preliminary assumptions, could be available in the country in the second quarter of next year, “Habicht said.
It points out that Ukraine has the right to receive vaccines that will be paid for in full or partially funded by donors through a separate mechanism, which is part of the COVAX mechanism.
Habicht emphasizes that the final conditions and the complete support package will be available after approval by the GAVI board.
It was previously reported that the WHO is impressed with the speed of development of COVID vaccines. Vaccine research has never advanced as fast as now.
