The man locked himself in the police house Friday morning and threatened to detonate a grenade. They wanted to conduct a search of his home as part of a criminal prosecution for the cultivation of sleeping pills or hemp, Kharkiv police said.
The KORD special forces commander in Kharkov during the negotiations withdrew a grenade from a 66-year-old man, the National Police of the Kharkov region reported on 13 November.
At around 8:50 am, officers from the Osnovyansky Police Department attempted to conduct an authorized search of the man in criminal proceedings for sowing or growing sleeping poppies or hemp.
He went to the police with a grenade, took the pin from him and threatened to blow it up.
Law enforcement officers negotiated with the attacker for several hours. As a result, the man agreed to deliver the ammunition, the RG-42 grenade, to the Kharkov special forces commander KORD.
There were no casualties as a result of the incident.
Kharkov Region Deputy Chief of Police Sergey Chizh said investigators entered information into the Unified Register of Pretrial Investigations under Part 1 of art. 348 (usurpation of the life of a law enforcement officer) and Part 1 of art. 263 (Illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The man faces a prison sentence of up to 15 years or life in prison.
