Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ukraine may face its worst recession in a decade. As a result of the economic collapse, more than 9 million Ukrainians may find themselves in poverty.
This is stated in the report of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Ukraine of October 2020.
Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, more than 80% of households have lost income, and in more than 40% of families, at least one family member has lost a job, according to UN data.
“Although there is no data yet for eastern Ukraine, the socio-economic consequences of this recession for the conflict-affected region are likely to be devastating,” the UN said.
The organization also records an increase in the proportion of households with debt. At the beginning of the pandemic, the proportion of those households was 11% and in September it increased to 15%.
Recall that in mid-October, the International Monetary Fund estimated the global losses due to the financial crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Furthermore, the British Defense Headquarters believes that the coronavirus pandemic could lead to a new world war.
