The coronavirus pandemic may end when approximately 70% of the population is vaccinated – WHO
Coping with a pandemic of a new type of coronavirus infection without vaccinating a certain part of the population is impossible, according to the WHO.
The coronavirus pandemic could end when about 70% of the world’s population is vaccinated against the virus, said Sumiya Swaminathan, chief scientist at the World Health Organization (WHO). On Wednesday, November 11, RIA Novosti reported.
“Maybe 70%,” Swaminathan suggested during an online question and answer session.
He added that the vaccine must be safe and effective, and meet all necessary WHO standards in these areas.
That same day, the WHO announced a new anti-record for the number of coronavirus infections detected in the world. The number of new cases for the week exceeded 3.6 million, it is observed that this is the highest weekly figure since the beginning of the pandemic. The highest proportion of new cases was registered in the European Region.
According to the latest data, almost 1.3 million people died in the world because of the new coronavirus infection, almost 52 million cases of contagion were detected, of which 33.7 million ended in the patient’s recovery.
Recall that the number of coronavirus cases in Ukraine is close to 500 thousand, almost 260 thousand of them are active, around 28.5 thousand patients have been hospitalized in hospitals.
