Kernes spent the election race in a hospital, first in Kharkov, where he was hospitalized due to a coronavirus infection, then in Charite in Berlin, due to an exacerbation of chronic diseases. Doctors attribute Kernes’s deteriorating health to the injury he received as a result of the assassination attempt in 2014.

Kernes’ team has regularly denied rumors of his death for the past two months. According to the Kharkiv City Council, he is alive and well. He was last seen in public on City Day, August 23, 2020.
