The security forces detained most of the protesters in Minsk. Eight arrested journalists, two athletes and “Miss Belarus 2008” are known.
In Belarus, riot police and riot police detained 1,023 people in mass protests. These data were given in the private accreditation of the Belarusian human rights center “Viasna” on the morning of November 9.
Most of the detainees are in Minsk. Several people were arrested in Bereza, Vitebsk, Bobruisk, Gomel, Grodno, Mogilev, Lyakhovichi and Pinsk.
Among those detained are Belarusian model, Miss Belarus 2008 winner Olga Khizhenkova, Olympic Games silver medalist, athlete Andrei Kravchenko and kickboxer Ivan Ganin.
The Belarusian Journalists Association reported on November 8 via Telegram about eight media workers detained. At 10:20 p.m. on November 8, three of them remained behind bars.
Since August 9, in Belarus, the massive protests of those who do not agree with the results of the presidential elections have not stopped. According to official data, Alexander Lukashenko won them with 80.1% of the voters. Opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya came in second with 10.1% of the vote. At the same time, alternative exit polls showed the opposite picture: Tikhanovskaya’s confident victory.
The Belarusian security forces violently dispersed the demonstrations using explosions, rubber bullets and water cannons. During the protests, hundreds of protesters were injured and wounded. According to official figures, four protesters died.
Lukashenka assumed the presidency on September 23. For the first time in the history of Belarus, the opening ceremony was not announced or broadcast on television. Several states, including the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Denmark, Ukraine and the Czech Republic, did not recognize Lukashenko’s inauguration.
On November 6, the European Union imposed personal sanctions against Lukashenka due to continued repression against civil society and the opposition. In total, the EU sanctions list includes more than 40 Belarusian officials involved in repressing protests and electoral fraud.
