On Friday, November 6th, Kiev Metro accomplished 60 years. Thus, on this day in 1960 the first stage was inaugurated with a length of 5.2 kilometers from five stations.
These were “Vokzalnaya”, “University”, “Khreshchatyk”, “Arsenalnaya” and “Dnipro” modern red branch. The inauguration began with a solemn gathering at Khreshchatyk station. Then the first train with passengers left.
The Kiev metro became third in the USSR after Moscow and Leningrad, although the idea of laying the subway appeared here back in 1884.
The tunnel was supposed to go from the Dnieper quay to the train station via Postal Square and Bessarabka. But the deputies of the city council rejected the project.
In the summer of 1949 the first underground mines were laid. The hardest part was working with the deepest station, Arsenalnaya.
Its intermediate lobby was built using the box method: a huge reinforced concrete glass weighing 3.5 thousand tons, built on the surface, was lowered 50 meters deep. Every day the structure was lowered by one meter under its own weight.
Currently, the Kiev metro consists of three lines with a total length of almost 70 kilometers and 52 operating stations.
Earlier, OBOZREVATEL told how the subway for Vynohradar in Kiev is being built: video of the tunnel. According to the mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, the construction of two new stations is scheduled.
