The satirical writer, People’s Artist of Ukraine and the Russian Federation, Mikhail Zhvanetsky, who passed away today, admitted in 2006 in an interview with journalist Dmitry Gordon that he values ​​freedom and lack of fuss more.

According to the satirist, both managed to achieve in his native Odessa, where he came every year throughout the summer and where he wrote his works.

“I want, damn, the least possible fuss distracted me. This summer I worked really well, wrote a lot and in my opinion this is exciting, what I did: there was so much laughter. I no longer need to meet people, I don’t need to study characters; I’ve been doing this all my life. I took a bath for the first time at 40 and bathed only at 60, just like my own home. Mikhail Zhvanetsky died on November 6, 2020, he was 86 years old. The cause of death was not publicly reported. A month before that, the satirist had left the stage and stopped acting due to his age, but continued to write.

Zhvanetsky was born on March 6, 1934 in Odessa. For more than 50 years he performed on stage with author’s satirical works. Zhvanetsky is the first and permanent president of the World Club of Odessa residents, author of the books “Meetings in the streets”, “Two years”, “My Odessa”, “Women”, “Odessa Dachas”, “Complete works”. Recently, the satirist lived in Moscow with his wife Natalia and their son Dmitry.

In March 2014, Zhvanetsky signed an artists’ appeal against the occupation of Crimea. In 2015, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine added him to the “white list” of artists who supported Ukraine.
