Ukraine’s Interior Minister Arsen Avakov chartered a private plane for the delivery of Italy’s National Guard Vitaly Markiv to Ukraine because regular flights have been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, Deputy Interior Minister Anton said. Gerashchenko.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov paid UAH 836,244 for the rental of a private plane to bring National Guard Vitaly Markiv to Ukraine from Italy. This was announced by the Vice Minister of the Interior, Anton Gerashchenko, on Facebook.
According to Gerashchenko, the minister has not yet reflected these expenses in the electronic declaration due to the decision of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, by which certain norms of the anti-corruption legislation were declared unconstitutional, but notified in writing to the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption on costs.
“The need to use a charter plane was due to the difficult epidemic situation in Lombardy, the introduction of a curfew, a lockout and the threat of a possible closure of regular flights between Ukraine and Italy,” added the deputy minister.
Markiv spent almost three and a half years in an Italian prison. He was arrested in Bologna in June 2017 on suspicion of being involved in the murder of Italian photojournalist Andrea Rocchelli and his translator Andrei Mironov on May 24, 2014 in the Slavyansk region. According to the investigation, while on Mount Karachun, Markiv allegedly transmitted information on the whereabouts of the journalists. In July 2019, a court in Pavia sentenced the National Guard to 24 years in prison.
On November 3, 2020, the Milan Court of Appeal confirmed the defense appeal and fully acquitted Markiv. In the afternoon of the same day, he was released and on the morning of November 4 he returned to Ukraine.
