Kosovo’s leader, Hashim Thaci, and several of his associates were detained by the Kosovo Specialized Crimes Court. They are charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in 1998-1999.
The President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, accused of war crimes by the International Court of Justice, was arrested and taken into custody in The Hague. This is reported by the Special Prosecutor’s Office of the Court of International Crimes in Kosovo.
The report says that in addition to Thaci, the former speaker of the Kosovo parliament, Kadri Veseli, one of the Kosovo Liberation Army field commanders, Recep Selimi, and the former head of parliament Yakup Krasniqi were sent to the remand center.
The approved indictment establishes that war crimes have been committed in the form of illegal or arbitrary arrests and detentions, ill-treatment, torture and murder, as well as crimes against humanity in the form of imprisonment and other inhumane acts: torture, murder, enforced disappearances and persecution. The crimes reportedly took place throughout Kosovo and northern Albania and were committed by members of the Kosovo Liberation Army against hundreds of civilians and non-hostilities.
The approved indictment establishes that Thaci, Veseli, Selimi and Krasniki are individually criminally responsible for these crimes.
On June 24, the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Kosovo, based in The Hague, reported that the Special Chamber of the Kosovo Court 10-point indictment filed against the President of Kosovo Thaci, Veseli and others.
Thaci affirmed that if the accusation of the 1998-1999 war by the Specialized Prosecutor in The Hague is confirmed, he will resign immediately.
He pointed out that he may have made political mistakes, but he never committed war crimes. He added that he intends to help restore justice in the courts.
On November 5, he resigned.
In January 2016, the Netherlands gave the green light to the creation of a new international court in The Hague to deal with crimes committed in Kosovo during the 1998-1999 conflict.
In February 2016, Thaci was elected President of the partially recognized Republic of Kosovo.
Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008 and was recognized by 100 countries around the world. Serbia does not recognize the secession of Kosovo and considers it its territory.
