Today, November 3, Americans vote for the president. The main opponents in the US elections are Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Each of the candidates has their own history of relations with Ukraine and a vision of greater political cooperation. Read more about the position of Trump and Biden, the latest statements from politicians, in the RBC-Ukraine material.

“Ukrainian case” in the US and Trump’s position

The confrontation between presidential candidates of the United States began long before the official start of the electoral campaign, and Ukraine was at the center of a scandal that led to the impeachment of Donald Trump.

On September 25, 2019, Vladimir Zelensky and Donald Trump had a telephone conversation. During the conversation, the American president asked Zelensky to help investigate the corruption ties of the Biden family.

Recall that Hunter, the son of Joe Biden in 2014-2019, was a member of the board of directors of the energy company Burisma Group, which was engaged in the development of gas fields in Ukraine.

Following the disclosure of the content of the conversation between Zelensky and Trump, the Democrats initiated proceedings to impeach the US president on charges of abuse of power: illegal pressure on Ukraine in exchange for financial and military assistance.

On February 5, 2020, the Senate acquitted Trump of these charges. However, for our country, the political scandal in the United States played an unfavorable role. For several months, this issue was actively debated in the world media, and foreign partners distanced themselves from Ukraine in the field of foreign policy.

At the same time, Donald Trump declared that he supported Ukraine from the beginning. In an interview with Fox News in November 2019, the American president said that he loves the Ukrainian people, but wants to ensure that the assistance provided is used as intended.

He also noted that he sees nothing wrong with the fact that he calls on Kiev to fight corruption, calling Ukraine one of the most corrupt countries.

“Ukraine is the third most corrupt country in the world. We are going to send huge amounts of money to the country, and they are corrupt, they steal money,” Trump said.

What Biden said about Ukraine

Joe Biden visited Kiev on several occasions while serving as Vice President of the United States. He was called the “curator” of Ukrainian affairs in White House politics.

Biden has stated that his main goal in Ukraine is to fight corruption. He initiated the dismissal of Attorney General Viktor Shokin in 2016 and qualified the corresponding decision of the Verkhovna Rada as merit.

However, Biden’s opponents use this fact against him, as during Shokin’s work, the Attorney General’s Office was investigating the activities of Burisma, whose board included Hunter Biden.

During the election campaign, Joe Biden’s headquarters revealed a vision of new relations with Ukraine in the event of a candidate’s victory. So the priority issues are: the end of the war in Donbass, the provision of military assistance, incl. lethal weapons, anti-corruption.

“Joe Biden will seek an end to the conflict in Ukraine and will work with European allies to support Ukraine in its fight for the sovereign, democratic and prosperous future it deserves,” the headquarters said in a statement.

Let us remember that the popular vote in the presidential elections in the United States takes place on November 3, 2020, but the Electoral College will decide the outcome of the elections. To win, a candidate must receive more than 270 votes from state delegates.

It was previously reported that Democratic candidate Joe Biden tops the candidates’ ratings with an advantage of up to 8%.
