Vladimir Putin presented a bill to the State Duma that allows all former Russian presidents to acquire senator status for life.
This is evidenced on the bill page on the Duma website.
According to the bill, the president of Russia, who has ceased to exercise his powers, acquires the status of senator from the moment the corresponding application is submitted to the Federation Council. It must be sent within three months. Status is assigned to the head of state, who left office early or due to the expiration of his mandate.
Also, the powers of a senator or deputy can be terminated early if it turns out that they had foreign citizenship or did not meet the requirements for the period of residence in the region from which they were appointed.
Therefore, if Putin leaves the presidency, he will automatically become a senator.
In addition, with this bill, Putin proposes to give the president the opportunity to appoint up to 30 individual senators, 7 of them for life.
We will recall, on July 4, in Russia, in accordance with the decree of President Vladimir Putin, the amendments to the Constitution entered into force.
The amendments allow the current president to run again for this position in 2024; Vladimir Putin may remain in power until 2036.
