The next round of the Ukrainian championship opened the duel between Shakhtar Donetsk and Mariupol. The Pitmen approached the confrontation with the Azov club in good humor after an emotional Champions League match. It was not possible to beat Inter Milan in Kiev, but considering the way events unfolded, a draw was a fairly acceptable result. In addition, after two duels, the Donetsk team leads the group, in which they were certainly not favorites.
Having set a course for rejuvenation, “Mariupol” does not display brilliant football, but he scores points regularly. Azov’s team does not shine with attack, but Ostap Markevich’s team’s defense is reliable. But just before the meeting with Shakhtar, Mariupol’s team faced a catastrophic personnel situation. 13 footballers hired at the Donetsk club at a time could not help their partners. Added to this was the disqualification of Bykov. As a result, six Mariupol players made their Premier League debut at once, and there were only three (!) Combat Units on the bench. An experimental team entered the court for Shakhtar. Pyatov, Stepanenko and Tyson returned to base, Vakula, Sudakov and Vyunnik had a chance to prove their worth.
Immediately after the opening whistle, the Pitmen took the lead and began to besiege the opponents’ penalty area. The first 15 minutes of play, the home team looked closely at the bloodless Mariupol, and then began to threaten the goal. Following a cross from a corner kick, Stepanenko was parried by Kudrik in the knockdown, while Vyunnik missed the target from an acute angle. Vyunnik himself failed to knock out the goalkeeper, bursting into the “Mariupol” penalty area from the left. Kudrik recorded another save after hitting Vakula. But the corner that followed this moment ended in trouble for the Azov team. The ball hit Tishchenko’s hand up high and the referee pointed to the 11-meter mark. Tyson converted the penalty with a cold-blooded blow.
Having opened the scoring in the match, the Pitmen continued to attack academically, but this was enough to create scoring chances. And if it weren’t for Kudrik’s luck and dependable play, the result could have been devastating even before the break. The “Mariupol” goalkeeper rescued his team after the blows of Vakula and Patrick. He could distinguish himself in the first half and Sudakov, from the right corner of the penalty near the far post. Most of the Mariupol residents fought back. The first sensible attack by the guests came after half an hour of play, they even earned a corner. However, Pyatov did not have to worry about the security of his doors.
And yet the Pitmen were not limited to a minimal lead in the first half of the match. The second goal was scored by the young talents of the Donetsk club. Vyunnik in the central zone before the penalty made a margin for Sudakov, who shot straight to the corner.
The second half, in fact, became a mere formality. Even the most devoted fans of “Mariupol” hardly believed in the possibility of a comeback. To the honor of the Azov people, after the break, they began to participate more actively in the attack. But the Pitmen immediately demonstrated how this could turn out for the guests, having managed to pull off several sharp counterattacks.
Shakhtar played and did it with confidence. The third goal against Mariupol came from another penalty, which was won by Tete, who entered as a substitute. This time Alan Patrick approached the 11-meter mark and Kudrik, who guessed the direction of the blow, missed the ball.
The unexpected goal against Shakhtar did not affect the balance of power. Mishnev, from a free kick from midfield, led Gorbunov one on one with Pyatov, who accurately shot the goalkeeper. The Pitmen restored the status quo in a few minutes. Tyson from the left burst into the Mariupol team’s penalty area and fired with precision into the far corner. Shakhtar could have scored more, but they were limited to four successful shots. And Kudrik managed to add a few more saves to his account before the end of the match.
In a week, Ukrainian football will follow Shakhtar vs. Dynamo Kiev, and Mariupol will continue his away streak against Olimpik.
