In the second round of the Europa League group stage, Luhansk Zarya hosted Braga. Viktor Skripnik’s charges lost in the first match, so they had to win in the reporting match to confirm their claims to qualify from the group. But the Lugansk people did not go according to the script already at the opening of the meeting. In the fourth minute, Paulinho overtook Vernidub after a cross from Esgaio and sent the ball into the net – 0: 1. In two minutes, Vernidub was able to correct his mistake by breaking his head after a free kick, but his shot was inaccurate .
The hosts moved to the foreign half of the field with great forces. They immediately started shooting at goal from different distances, but instead of scoring a goal, they missed their own. Silva took advantage of the gap between the lines of Zarya’s players, leading Gaitán to shock position, and Nicolás sent the ball under the crossbar – 0: 2. After scoring a second time, the guests sank into their own midfield, concentrating entirely on defense. Lugancs completed several more attacks with shots on target, but they posed no threat to Matheus. After a while, the “gunsmiths” took the ball again, but were in no hurry to attack, content to roll it.
Carlos Carvalyala’s players controlled the ball for several minutes, after which they again gave the initiative to Zara. In one of the episodes, Kabaev got a dangerous free kick, thanks to which Yurchenko had a great chance to score, but Mateus easily coped with Vladlen’s direct shot. Almost immediately after that, Braga took the game back from his half of the field, but tried to threaten Vasil’s goal.
Closer to the end of the first half, the hosts reactivated, again and again charging the ball into the penalty area. Yurchenko had two more chances to score, but the midfielder didn’t take any of them. Vladlen twice missed the goal from advantageous positions, missing opportunities to relive the intrigue as the teams took a break with a comfortable lead from the guests.
Immediately after the resumption of play, the Lugansk team took possession of the playing advantage, moving to the other side of the field. They hoped to score a quick goal that would revive the intrigue, but there were no dangerous moments at Matheus’ gate. The hosts again and again loaded the ball into the penalty area, but this did not bring any benefit: Braga’s defenders avoided the threat of their goal. Skripnik’s charges also hoped to score after set-pieces tackles, but they didn’t lead to anything, either.
In one of the episodes, Kabaev was able to close the gap by breaking into the penalty area and making his way towards the goal, but his shot lacked precision. Skripnik decided to strengthen the attack by releasing Gladky on the field, who was supposed to help the team score. However, the appearance of Alexander in the end hardly helped the people of Lugansk. Ivanisenya had a great opportunity to excel, but Dmitry managed to miss the goal from two meters.
A few minutes after that, Yurchenko didn’t notice another moment. Vladlen weakly rolled the ball into Matheus’ hands, being in an advantageous position. With every minute, Zarya’s pressure on someone else’s penalty area grew, but this did not result in more shots on target. The dangerous moments stopped arising, everything was limited only to the accesses to Matheus’s domain. At the end of one of the attacks, Kabaev found himself in a shock position in the penalty area, but Vladislav hesitated with the ball, missing the opportunity to hit the goal.
Towards the end of the match, the guests calmed the game, moving him away from his half of the field. They could even have scored the third goal, but Guilherme couldn’t push the ball past Vasil, coming face to face with the goalkeepers. He also threatened the owners A. Orta, who completed the step alone with a goal kick, but Zarya’s goalkeeper faced it.
Carvaljala’s players had plenty of ball possession late in the match, playing skillfully to maintain the winning result. But still they couldn’t leave the field without conceding a goal. In the last minute of the fight, Ivanisenya shot the goal from a distance, but Mateus did not help, having slept during this episode: 1: 2. Immediately after that, the final whistle of the referee sounded, which recorded the second loss from the Lugansk team. Consequently, they did not score a single point after two rounds played, releasing Braga and Leicester at a distance of six points.
In the third round, Zarya will host AEK and Braga will visit Leicester.
