A base has been created for a COVID vaccine in Ukraine

The cost of pre-clinical trials of the Ukrainian vaccine is provisionally estimated at 150 million UAH.

At the same time, it is still a long way from creating a vaccine, its protein-based prototype has yet to pass preclinical testing.

Specialists from the Institute of Microbiology and Virology named DK Zabolotny of the National Academy of Sciences created a protein that can become the basis for a coronavirus vaccine. This was announced on Wednesday, October 28, by the head of the institute’s department and the president of the supervisory board of one of the private pharmaceutical companies Nikolai Spivak in a briefing, the UNIAN news agency reported.

According to him, the introduction of this protein in experimental animals elicited a sustained immune response through the production of antibodies.

At the same time, the creation of a vaccine is still a long way off – its protein-based prototype has not yet passed preclinical testing, Spivak noted.

These tests require 150 million UAH, which, according to Spivak, was promised to him by the president and the prime minister.

Earlier, Chief Medical Officer Viktor Lyashko said that Ukraine does not have the developer status of a candidate for a COVID-19 vaccine, despite relevant investigations being carried out in the country.
