Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said criminal proceedings were opened against mayors of some cities due to the quarantine violation, while mayors tell voters they want to “get rid” of them before the elections.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in an interview with Ukrainian channels on October 22, said that due to mayors like Gennady Kernes, who ignored the quarantine, a large number of people died from the coronavirus in Ukraine. The broadcast was made by the Segodnya YouTube channel.
“Criminal cases have been instituted everywhere, after which the mayors of certain cities lead them to their rhetoric. They come out and say:” Since the elections, they want to kick me out “.”, – said Zelensky.
He cited the example of Kernes, who became ill with COVID-19 himself as a result.
“For example, I do not wish the mayor of Kharkov anything bad. Today he is in a difficult situation. He is seriously ill. I will not say anything bad. Besides, he probably did important things for Kharkov. he listened, he stopped the subway when he felt that the number of patients was increasing. Then he said that everything would be fine, but now he got sick, unfortunately, and his situation is difficult, “the president recalled.
He noted that after packed concerts in Dnipro, Odessa and Kharkov, criminal proceedings were opened against the organizers for violating quarantine restrictions.
Kernes last appeared in public on August 23, at events for City Day and National Flag Day. On September 14, ZN.UA reported that he became ill with COVID-19 in early September and was hospitalized with bilateral pneumonia. Sources in the publication claimed that Kernes was in a coma. On September 15, the Kharkiv City Council confirmed that Kernes is hospitalized with the coronavirus, but noted that he “laughed a lot and very hard” at the reports of a coma.
On the night of September 17, Kernes was transferred to Germany for treatment at the Charite clinic. Relatives of the politician reported that his health was stable. On October 2, a businessman and friend of Kernes, Pavel Fuks, said that the mayor of Kharkiv had received a negative test for coronavirus.
On October 12, the head of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration, Aleksey Kucher, in an interview with journalist Dmitry Gordon, said Kernes was feeling bad. On October 13, the Charite clinic issued a statement: “Kernes from Kharkov (Ukraine) is with us in treatment. Every day he progresses and we look forward to his full recovery.”
Kernes’ son Daniel said that after the injury to the mayor of Kharkiv in 2014, he had a weak lung, then a bullet “went through” him. The severe course of Kernes disease is supposedly associated with this.
