The hero of football day. Igor Jovichevich, 19.10.2020 ᐉ UA-Football

To be honest, it is still unclear what Igor Jovichevich is like as a coach. You can see that the Croatian is full of ambition. One can feel his charisma in behavior, in conversations, even in the style of clothing. But this alone is not enough for a successful coaching career. After all, there should be a relevant knowledge and skills base.

When Jovichevich became the director of Dnipro-1 and gave an interview for the first time, he immediately remembered his time in Lviv Karpaty: the same clear pronunciation, the same scrupulous approach to defining and setting goals. In this he did not change himself. It hasn’t changed that his words and beautiful speeches were clearly ahead of his team’s game in terms of development. Dnipro-1 played two games in the UPL and won one point. He also played in the Cup and allowed himself three goals to be conceded by a lesser rival, which forced additional time to play.

Undoubtedly, it is a mistake to draw deep conclusions about the new coach from several post-crisis struggles, in which the team was before. But in the match against Oleksandriya, it became clear that Dnipro-1 was inconsistent with the principles on which the coach is based. Jovicevic asked to play with the ball, dominate, play clearly in the pass and use space in the opponent’s half, but Sharan’s team controlled the situation. With his simple football, he literally “trampled” Dnipro, whose technical arsenal lagged behind thoughts and plans.

With “Vorskla” it was already better, and here is the merit of the coach. Jovicevic changed his style a bit when he realized that his players are not yet capable of showing the football that he considers ideal. But the victory over “Desna” is generally the best that coach Jovichevich has achieved in Ukraine. Not just during his cadence on Dnepr-1, but possibly considering the period spent at Karpaty.

The team, which recently played at the same level with Dynamo and Shakhtar (in some moments of the matches he even played them again), was dismantled in parts. “Dnepr-1” cut off all oxygen. Wherever there was a transfer of the Desna footballer, one of the rival team’s players was everywhere. Jovicevic, as he wanted, blocked the space. It also turned out to be an individual game: the hosts’ individual passes with the ball became a serious weapon for Dnipro-1 in this fight. In the end, there were also other important components: target orientation (attacks ended with blows), pressure, variability (when there were several development options in the final phase of the attack). Everything that makes the team not a gray mouse in the field.

And now the bigger question: did Dnipro-1 play that well or did Desna fall below his level? It is difficult to answer now, but one cannot help but notice the gradual progress in the game of Dnipro-1 compared to what it was in the duel with Oleksandriya (Jovichevich’s first). To be continue. Perhaps we will have a pleasant surprise in this championship.
