Vasily Lomachenko stopped one step away from the absolute lightweight championship, which he had been to for the past two years, picking up belts little by little. Teófimo López defeated the favorite, becoming the absolute at twenty-three years old.
Why did Lomachenko lose?
If at the weigh-in ceremony Vasily looked cheerful and cheerful, then in the dressing room his eyes did not shine in the same way. Vasily went to the fight without beauty or honors and with such indifference, as if there was a regular match ahead. So the whole fight happened.
From the first seconds Lomachenko promised to probe the distance with López, while he responded with power blows. Basically on the block, but the impression created. Commentators were happy: Lomachenko is not that small, he jerks around and is generally light, as in his prime years.
Four rounds later, Lomachenko continued to move. Sometimes he would throw a jab, but otherwise he would focus on the movement, like dancing salsa, rather than going out to box. And López won. And he won. And he won. Yes, most of the blows were given by chance, to the block or to the Ukrainian’s elbow. But Teofimo won, advanced and showed some kind of activity. And Vasily just made a circle.
Midway through the fight, an excitement began even in the voices of the positive commentators: Lomachenko still hadn’t hit. That is to say, there were some outbreaks, but it was so insignificant in the context of Theophimus’ regular activity that it was unlikely that anything would be missed.
In fact, Lomachenko started boxing around the seventh-eighth round. Not that, as before, he accelerated and was going to beat his opponent. Just a little better than before. Strikes, combinations appeared. Interestingly, there were many successes. Statistically, Vasily hit a lot, most of the shots thrown. Only now he pitched three times less than López. At three!
While Teofimo was active and fighting for the belts, Vasily was thinking of something of his own. He threw the opponent to the left and the left to the right. Or vice versa. But all this without blows or with a light blow, which the judges hardly considered a full blow. Finally, two things became clear: only a knockout will help win and a knockout will come only thanks to a miracle.
And all because Vasily still beats a little. It was even possible to give it rounds due to the fact that the activity approximately stabilized and the precision was several times higher. But this is not enough for an overall victory. Theophimus was clearly not tormented by Vasily’s blows to give up. He wasn’t going to fall, either. And there was no time left to take the victory on points.
As a result: wild evaluations from the judges. Where did Teofimo count 119 points there (one round lost)? It’s a kind of cruel joke and a clear sign: in America no one will let you win, even if you are Lomachenko, but in rivals a young American is one step away from the absolute. We suspect this could be, but now confirmation. Receive, sign.
On the other hand, Vasily lost anyway. What is the difference with what score, if there was no smell of victory there? Even though his story was that he thought the first half was the same and Teofimo only took a few rounds. For what he needed to do rounds, Lomachenko didn’t say.
Is Teofimo that good?
Lopez is still fine. He caught Vasily with heavy blows as often as no one ever had. There were several cases and even falls, but several uppercuts came with such precision that there were doubts about whether Lomachenko would survive. And López worked on the helmet with high quality and insurance.
On the other hand, Vasily sent most of López’s activities into oblivion. The blows flew to the block, passed, to the elbows and anywhere but the target. I mean, everything was fine with protection there. Vasily failed when he flirted. When I ran to the wheelhouse in the last seconds and tried to prove something to ourselves and the American.
In trench warfare, Lomachenko rarely misses episodes. Theophimus took them because of their activity, or very rarely managed to shoot Vasily from a distance. It’s just that Lopez received so little in return that it’s indecent to even talk about it.
There may be several reasons for this:
– an uncomfortable opponent. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about it. Work only with similar people, get ready and do your best. And the opponent will still be uncomfortable.
– Battle plan. Perhaps there was a calculation to win in the later rounds. If so, Vasily and his team made a big mistake evaluating the opponent. Teofimo did twelve rounds well. It turns out that lack of experience does not affect anything.
– old age. It’s just that Loma decided to save his strength to fire a jet at the end, but it didn’t work: Teofimo didn’t fall, he didn’t suffer and he even responded. There is also nothing you can do about it.
Whats Next?
There might be an option with Devin Haney, the WBC champion, but Teofimo is ready to meet him. Devin is unlikely to choose Loma. You can pick anyone from the top 5 and break it if the reason for the defeat is not old age. If it isn’t, we’ll find out only in the next fight.
Or he can downgrade, where there are opponents of suitable dimensions and someone to box with. Hack to death with Leo Santa Cruz or Jervonta Davis. There are enough interesting names and fights there. At the same time, the rivals are not giants like Teofimo.
This option seems the most appropriate, given the absence of a rematch clause in the contract.
