Armistice violated in Nagorno-Karabakh
Baku also accuses Yerevan of violating the humanitarian truce in Nagorno-Karabakh, which began operating on October 18.
Azerbaijan launched an offensive in the southern part of Nagorno-Karabakh, near the border with Iran, Armenian Defense Ministry spokeswoman Shushan Stepanyan said on her Facebook page on October 18.
“Despite the announcement of a new humanitarian ceasefire, the Azerbaijani armed forces again seriously violated the agreement,” Stepanyan wrote.
According to her, on October 18 at approximately 7:20 local time (6:20 Kiev time), the Azerbaijani army, with the support of artillery, launched an offensive in the area of the Khudaferin reservoir in order to take advantageous positions. A spokesman for the ministry noted that both parties are suffering losses.
The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, in turn, claimed that it was Armenia that violated the ceasefire and at night fired on the outskirts of the city of Jebrail and the villages of Nagorno-Karabakh taken under Azerbaijani control.
“During the night, the enemy with mortars and artillery fired on the surroundings of the city of Jebrail, as well as the villages of this region liberated from occupation, located along the Araz river,” the ministry said.
The previous ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh came into effect on Saturday 10 October. On the same day, the parties to the conflict accused each other of violating the ceasefire.
