On the night of October 18 (in Kiev, Sunday morning) at Las Vegas (USA) A fight for the lightweight absolute world champion title took place between a Ukrainian Vasily Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KOs) and American Teofimo Lopez (15-0, 12 KOs).
Lopez actively started the fight, trying to surprise Vasily. Lomachenko passed the first rounds of recognition, although in the second round one of the combinations hit the American’s head. Starting in the third round, the Ukrainian began to pick up the pace, although in one of the episodes Teofimo pressed Vasily against the ropes, however Lomachenko came out with confidence from the blows.
In the fourth or fifth round, Teofimo López held the center of the ring and hit Vasily in the body several times, which, however, did not affect the speed of Lomachenko, who encountered kickback. Significantly, Lopez threw more than a hundred punches in the first five rounds, but only one in ten was accurate, while Lomachenko delivered 28 direct punches, of which 40% were accurate.
If on the eve of the battle, most experts expected that closer to the equator in Teofimo the fuel would run out, then in the sixth round the American looked absolutely level (or even more active in terms of number of hits) of the Ukrainian champion.
In the seventh round, Lopez began to invest more in the power of his punches. As before, they weren’t as accurate as possible, but the three minutes ended visually in favor of the American. After this round, even the bookmakers began to give Teofimo a notable advantage.
But in the eighth round, Lomachenko pulled off an excellent counterattack combination, momentarily knocking Lopez off the track. The American, however, extinguished Vasily’s activity with a clinch and then tried to take the initiative. The Ukrainian boxer did not get caught. In the ninth round, the rivals took a break, preparing for the championship. Although Vasily specifically in this period and struck more often, and struck. Lopez allowed himself to rest in the 10th, while Lomachenko tried to catch up in the early rounds.
At 11, Lomachenko managed to hit Lopez well, but the American remained on his feet and Vasily failed to develop his lead and send his opponent at least one knockdown. Finally, in the last round, the boxers repeatedly organized exchanges – Lomachenko aimed for the head, López – for the body. In the end, the final bell showed that the judges would decide the winner in battle.
Obviously, Lomachenko’s calculation for later rounds did not work, as the judges, by unanimous decision, gave victory for Teofimo López (116 – 112, 119 – 109, 117-111)… The American thus won the WBC Franchise, WBA Super, WBO and IBF championship belts.
