Russia vows to respond to sanctions for Navalny
Only the UN Security Council has the right to impose sanctions, they said in the Russian Federation and promised to respond to the EU decision.
The Russian representative to the European Union, Vladimir Chizhov, called the EU measures taken in relation to the poisoning of Alexei Navalny as illegal, Interfax reports on Saturday, October 17.
“This decision confirmed our worst fears that relations between Russia and the EU will reach their lowest level in recent times,” he said.
Chizhov said the EU did not provide any evidence of the connection of the people who fell under the sanctions “to this story to somehow justify such a step, which is illegitimate in any case.”
According to him, the sanctions were based on the fact that since they were proposed by Germany and France, “you just have to believe it.”
As Chizhov put it, “of course, we regard these restrictions in the same way as all the previous ones, as unilateral illegal measures.”
He stressed that there is only one authority in the world authorized to impose sanctions: the UN Security Council.
Chizhov also said that the Russian Federation will take retaliatory measures against the EU sanctions.
Recall that the EU adopted a decision on sanctions for the Navalny poisoning on 15 October. The sanctions list included six Russian officials, as well as the Organic Chemistry Research Institute.
Great Britain also joined them.
