The name of Marshal Georgy Zhukov was returned to Odessa Central Avenue. The mayor of the city, Gennady Trukhanov, wrote about this on Facebook. He called this decision a victory.
According to him, the decision to change the name of the avenue was personally made by former Governor Mikhail Saakashvili during the campaign for decommunication in Ukraine. Now the street, named after the Hundred Celestials, Euromaidan fighters killed during clashes with law enforcement officers, will return its historical name, as Saakashvili’s decision was illegal.
“Georgy Zhukov is not subject to the decommunication law, because he is a fighter against fascism,” Trukhanov said.
Furthermore, the city’s historical and toponymic commission agreed to return the historical name and Ingleza Street, which used to be named after the 25th Chapayev Division. The mayor stressed that the law of decommunication does not apply either, since the street was named “the legendary formation that defended the city from the occupiers during the war.”
“We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but the main steps have already been taken. And we will do everything possible to finally restore historic justice, ”said the mayor.
Marshal Zhukov Avenue was renamed Heavenly Hundred Avenue in 2016. The decision then sparked an outcry among the townspeople. For the first time, they began to speak in Odessa about returning the historical name to the street in the spring of 2017, but the radicals strongly opposed and repeatedly desecrated the bas-relief and the Zhukov memorial plaque: they poured paint over the monuments and dismantled them without Excuse me. The latest such incident took place in October last year and sparked outrage from passersby. In December 2019, the inhabitants gathered near the destroyed bas-relief and celebrated the marshal’s birthday.
