The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adan Ghebreyesus, has named the drug, which is the only one that has proven its effectiveness in the treatment of severe Covid-19. This is dexamethasone. Other drugs, remdesivir and interferon, have little effect.

“The corticosteroid dexamethasone remains now the only therapeutic agent that has demonstrated efficacy against Covid-19 in patients with severe disease,” said the WHO chief.
Ghebreyesus recalled that after a large-scale study of the effectiveness of drugs called “Solidarity” in June, the WHO concluded that it was necessary to stop the trials of hydroxychloroquine. And in July, the organization announced that patients would stop receiving lopinavir and ritonavir.
“The interim results of this study now show that the other two drugs, remdesivir and interferon, have little effect in preventing mortality or reducing hospital stays,” Gebreyesus said.
On behalf of WHO, he thanked the patients who participated in the trials and the hospitals and countries that had borne the costs during the trials. According to him, Solidaridad covers almost 13 thousand patients in 500 hospitals in 30 countries.
As the WHO director-general said, today “many other drug trials are still underway” that are supposed to be used in the fight against the coronavirus.
