Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed extending the Treaty on the Limitation of Strategic Offensive Weapons (START-3) for one year “without any conditions.” However, the United States rejected such an offer.

This was reported by the Kremlin press service and National Security Council of the United States.

The contract expires on February 4 of next year.

The Russian and American parties send each other proposals and conditions for its extension.

“Work on the direct extension of the Treaty without conditions not contained in it has practically not started yet,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Putin said it would be sad if the Treaty ceased to exist and was not replaced by another such document.

However, Washington refused to extend the START III treaty. At the same time, the United States called the Russian president’s initiative to extend the START Treaty without taking into account the freezing of the size of the nuclear arsenals of the two countries “doomed.”

In addition, the US President’s National Security Advisor expressed the hope that Russia will reconsider its position on the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty before the start of an “expensive arms race.”

We will recall, earlier in the United States they announced that they are willing to extend the Treaty on the reduction of offensive weapons, subject to a temporary freeze on the size of nuclear arsenals.

In addition, the US administration is ready to put nuclear weapons in combat status to pressure Russia in negotiations to reach new agreements on the reduction of strategic offensive weapons.
