The only drug that has been shown to be effective in treating severe COVID-19 patients is dexamethasone, the World Health Organization said.
According to the head of the WHO, Tedros Adanom Ghebreyesus, the corticosteroid dexamethasone is the only therapeutic agent that has demonstrated efficacy against the coronavirus in patients with severe COVID-19.
Gebreyesus emphasized that the drugs remdesivir and interferon, which were seen as promising early in the pandemic, were ineffective. Also in June, the WHO stopped investigating the use of hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of COVID-19, and in July, the study of the action of a combination of lopinavir and ritonavir was stopped:
«The results of the interim investigation show that the other two study drugs, remdesivir and interferon, have little or no effect in preventing death from COVID-19 or reducing hospital stays. “
At the end of June, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine introduced dexamethasone into the protocol for the treatment of patients with coronavirus.
Health Minister Maxim Stepanov urged Ukrainians not to take dexamethasone without a doctor’s appointment. He explained that it is a hormonal drug that is used exclusively for respiratory distress.
