To pass the amendments to the Constitution on reducing the number of people’s deputies to 300, the support of a constitutional majority of the current composition of the Verkhovna Rada is required. The Servant of the People does not have these votes, so the Presidency decided to raise this issue in a poll on October 25.
This was reported by the OP’s press service.
Zelensky is confident that the opinion of the people on this issue will affect the deputies, who have not yet approved changes to the Constitution to reduce the number of deputies. The bill has already been preliminarily approved by the Rada, and also passed the Constitutional Court review. But to approve it, more than 300 deputies are needed, which the Servant of the People faction does not have.
“If people say yes, no politician, no matter how much financial, media or partisan influence, will be able to deny the will of the people,” the OP stressed.
The same initiative to reduce the number of popular deputies is explained by the fact that in the course of decentralization many resources and competencies were transferred to the regions, and therefore “the need for a greater concentration of professionalism” arose in the parliament. The current number of deputies (450 according to the Constitution) “is a temptation for the big players to donate seats on the list in exchange for years of companionship.” Reducing the number of people’s deputies, according to the OP, will increase competition and increase the professionalism of the Rada.
Recall that today Vladimir Zelensky named three final questions of the survey. They also refer to the legalization of cannabis for seriously ill patients, as well as raising the question at the international level about the implementation of the guarantees of the Budapest Memorandum.
