IMF predicts a decline in Ukraine's population

The IMF has worsened the forecast of reduction of the population of Ukraine

Ukraine will lose 1 million people in the next six years. According to the forecast, already in 2024 the population of Ukraine will fall below 41 million.

The International Monetary Fund predicted the dynamics of changes in Ukraine’s population up to 2025. Relevant materials were published in the IMF’s October World Economic Outlook materials on Thursday, October 15.

According to the IMF forecast, in six years the population of Ukraine will decrease by 1 million people. At the end of 2019, the population was 41.733 million people, according to the IMF, which is slightly less than the official data of the State Statistics Service (41.902 million people).

The IMF forecast shows that Ukraine’s population will be:

  • by the end of 2020 – 41,536 million people,

  • by the end of 2021 – 41,369 million people,

  • by the end of 2022 – 41,204 million people,

  • by the end of 2023 – 41.039 million people,

  • by the end of 2024 – 40.875 million people,

  • by the end of 2025 – 40,712 million people.

We would like to recall that previously the IMF raised expectations for the Ukrainian economy. This year, Ukraine’s economy will fall 7.2% and next year it will grow 3%, the fund expects.

It was also reported that the IMF has calculated the real exchange rate of the hryvnia. Based on purchasing power parity, the hryvnia’s exchange rate is four times higher than nominal, experts calculated.
