Ukraine does not have the technical capacity for mass production of the vaccine, but it can develop.

Ukrainian scientists can create a coronavirus vaccine, but the country cannot produce it. The academic of the National Academy of Sciences Serhiy Komissarenko announced this on Thursday, October 15, on the air of Ukraine 24 channel.

“We can create a vaccine, like, for example, a cook in the kitchen makes a cake. But then this cake must be made in the quantity of 80 million of the same samples, subject to all the quality control conditions. It is also the vaccine. Is our pharmaceutical industry ready to launch a vaccine? Big questions, “he said.

The academic pointed out that there is no genomic center in Ukraine, there is no right to work with viruses, there are no third level biosafety reference laboratories, there is no biotechnology center dedicated to expanding what is produced in the laboratory for mass production. “We can only create, not liberate,” he said.

As a negative example, Komissarenko cited the development of national tests.

“A sad example of how a diagnostic test was developed at the Institute of Molecular Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which was even put into effect by the presidential decree of March 13. But nothing was funded, as a result this test was never introduced. We can create a vaccine, we are working on it now, but whether it will be implemented is a completely different question, “said Komissarenko.

It should be noted that the Office of the President says that one of the opportunities for Ukraine to obtain a COVID vaccine is the production of foreign developments in domestic facilities.
