The Serie A Disciplinary Committee awarded Juventus a technical victory by 3: 0 in the match against Napoli, and eliminated an additional point from the Neapolitans for not appearing in the third round. The corresponding decision was published in the official website of Serie A.
Napoli did not come to Turin because Petr Zielinski and Elif Elmas fell ill with the coronavirus in the team. The club claimed that local health authorities had urged it to isolate itself as a precautionary measure.
Juventus and the Serie A League indicated that such cases were foreseen in the protocol of the Covid championship, adopted by all clubs before the start of the season. According to him, two cases of infection are not reason enough not to appear at the game.
Technically, the order of the local health authorities is more important than the orders of the soccer authorities, but the investigation decided that there was no force majeure in this case.
Although the health authority made the trip to Turin “challenging”, it was not banned until Sunday. And Napoli had already canceled flight and hotel reservations for that time. The disciplinary committee had only two options: to recognize the circumstances as force majeure or to award the Neapolitans a technical defeat and a penalty of one point.
According to the protocols of Serie A and UEFA, the match is not canceled as long as the team has at least 13 players, of which 1 is the goalkeeper.
Napoli is expected to appeal this decision.
